Speaker: WANG Zigan, Assistant Professor of bussiness school, the University of Hong KongVenue: Room 530, School of Economics, West Part of Zijingang CampusAbstract:We hypothesize and provide evidence that the effect of political connections on corporate taxation depends on firms' financial constraints. After an arguably exogenous increase in political connections arising from close congressional elections, financially unconstrained firms increase their tax planning, while constrained firms decrease it. The decrease (increase) in the tax planning of financially constrained (unconstrained) firms is more pronounced when the connected politicians serve on the banking-related (tax-related) committees. Constrained firms also experience a significant decrease in cost of capital and receive more government contracts after obtaining more political connections, supporting the idea that alleviating firms’ financial constraints is the mechanism through which political connections affect the tax planning of constrained firms. Collectively, our findings highlight the importance of financial constraints in understanding the tax planning of politically connected firms.

Managing the New Era in Business & Society - Virtual Joint PhD Workshop organized by ZJU and Tilburg UniversityVenue: A203, School of Management, Zijingang CampusAbstract:We are happy to announce the third TiU-ZJU workshop will take place on 27 May. The workshop is dedicated to research and best practice of PhD’s work on managing the new era in business and society. This PhD workshop is co-organized by Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM), Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB), Tilburg University, the Netherlands together with the School of Management (SOM) and School of Economics (SOE), Zhejiang University, China. Meeting societal changes often involves creating new business models, finding new ways to innovate, leveraging different technologies and strategy to engage with consumers, reconfiguring resources and designing new organizational structures. Yet today we still know relatively little about what organizations do to deal with these changes, what firms can do to boost their performance in the digital environment and how they can do this effectively and efficiently.Tilburg University and Zhejiang University have been collaborating increasingly closely during the past years. The purpose of this workshop is to further strengthen this collaboration, and to provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students from both sides to showcase their research and results of joint research projects, get to know each other’s research interests further and explore future collaboration opportunities. We invite faculty members, PhD students to join this workshop on 27 May. You can find the program below.
This PhD workshop is co-organized by Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM), Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB), Tilburg University, the Netherlands together with the School of Management (SOM) and School of Economics (SOE), Zhejiang University.

Speaker: XU Xianmin, associate professor of Institute of Computational Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.Venue: 316, Ouyang Chunmei Building, Yuquan CampusAbstract:The Onsager variational principle is a fundamental law for irreversible processes in nonequilibrium statistical physics. It has been used to model many complicated phenomena in soft matter. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction of the principle. In particular, I will show it can be used as a powerful approximation tool for many complicated two-phase flow problems. It can be used to derive efficient numerical methods for wetting problems on inhomogeneous surfaces. Contact: ZHANG Qinghai (0015089@zju.edu.cn)
